Hurricane of Independence:
The Untold Story of the Deadly Storm at the Deciding Moment of the American Revolution
Friday, September 12, 2008 at 5:30 PM
In 1773, when Samuel Adams boarded The Dartmouth dressed as a Mohawk Indian to lighten the ship’s cargo of tea he stated that his war party “acted on pure and upright principle.” During the late 18th century when our forefathers were grappling with philosophies of independence foundations for a future democracy, principles and religion were foremost concerns. Thus, in September 1775, with our Declaration of Independence less than a year away, America’s eighth deadliest Atlantic hurricane of all time ripped up the east coast, striking all of the important colonial capitals and killing more than four thousand people. In an era where hurricanes were viewed as omens from God, what this storm meant for colonists about the justness of their cause would yield unexpected results. Tony Williams’ Hurricane of Independence brings to life the untold story of the individual people in the eye of the storm and how they saved the American Revolution.
“Williams provides an interesting sidebar to the opening of the American Revolution… [This] double tale of natural disaster and epochal human events makes a good reading.” — Booklist
Tony Williams has taught history and literature for over ten years. He has a Masters in American History from Ohio State University and is working on a second in Governmental History from Ashland University. He is currently a fully time author living in Williamsburg, Virginia with his wife and children.

Satin Cash: Poems
Saturday, September 13 at 11:00 AM
In the wake of Blue Venus, called “a virtuoso book” by the Los Angeles Times Book Review, comes this ravishing volume of bodily, even carnal prayers, that quiver with the ecstasy and anguish of longing. Lisa Russ Spaar has long produced poems that emit a palpable, devotional Eros, but Satin Cash is a raw, more elemental invocation of human yearning — a startling song of worship and fetish.
“[Her poetry] is the perfect marriage of the realism of William Carlos Williams and the sleepless heaven-seeking … of Dickinson and Hopkins.” — Virginia Quarterly Review
Lisa Russ Spaar directs the Area Program in Poetry Writing at the University of Virginia. She has also been an instructor for the University’s Culture of London Summer Program at Regents College, and she recently edited the anthology, All That Mighty Heart: London Poems. Her other poetry books include Blue Venus, Glass Town, and the anthology Acquainted With the Night: Insomnia Poems.
