Advanced Fiction Workshop: Focus on Craft (Ongoing Spring Term Class)

April 11, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until May 30, 2019

Instructor: Christina Ward-Niven
$189 Members | $210 Nonmembers
Thursdays, 4/11/19 – 5/30/19 | 6:00 pm  – 8:30 pm

In this workshop, we will talk about how fiction works. Why do we love the stories we love? What tools did the author employ to affect us as readers? Each week, we’ll begin by discussing a story by a published author, looking at traditional craft elements (such as setting, detail, characterization, and dialogue) as well as other less concrete, but equally important aspects of narrative: tension, tone, the balancing of mystery and clarity, use of humor, handling of intimacy, and the value of strangeness as a route to the familiar. We’ll then examine our own fiction through these same lenses, in workshop. Short stories, flash fiction, and novel excerpts are welcome.

Required text: The Best American Short Stories 2018, edited by Roxane Gay. (Other reading may be distributed by the instructor via email.) To enroll in the class, students must submit a writing sample of around 750 words to the instructor. Email sample to programs@writerhouse.org.

Christina Ward-Niven holds an MFA in Fiction from Warren Wilson College’s Program for Writers. She also earned a BA in English from The College of William and Mary and an MS in Journalism from Boston University. She worked as a nonfiction writer and editor for several organizations in Washington, D.C., before moving to Charlottesville and shifting her focus to fiction. Her recent work has appeared or is forthcoming in Virginia Quarterly Review, Fiction Writers Review, CRAFT Literary, and elsewhere. She won second place in the 2016 American Short Fiction short-story contest.
