Daytime Combo: Fiction and Creative Nonfiction (Online class, CANCELED!)
September 16 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Instructor: Christina Ward-Niven
$189 Members | $210 Nonmembers
Wednesdays, 9/16/20 – 11/18/20 | 1:00 pm -3:00 pm
In this Zoom workshop, we will read one story or essay by a published author each week and discuss what makes it tick. How exactly does the piece work (or not)? We’ll dig into a wide range of craft topics, as they come up—point of view, characterization, pacing, suspense, mystery, etc. Next, we’ll turn the same lens to our own work, reading and responding to two participants’ pieces per week. Short stories, novel chapters, creative nonfiction, and/or personal essays are welcome. The instructor will provide each writer with a page of feedback. Links to online reading assignments will also be provided by the instructor, via email.
This class is appropriate for writers of intermediate or advanced level—those who have taken at least two workshops previously (at WriterHouse or elsewhere).
Christina Ward-Niven holds an MFA in Fiction from Warren Wilson College’s Program for Writers. She also earned a BA in English from The College of William and Mary and an MS in Journalism from Boston University. She worked as a nonfiction writer and editor for several organizations in Washington, D.C., before moving to Charlottesville and shifting her focus to fiction. Her recent work has appeared or is forthcoming in Antioch Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Fiction Writers Review, CRAFT Literary, and elsewhere. She won second place in the 2016 American Short Fiction short-story contest.
