Daytime Fiction

March 21 @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Instructor: Brady Earnhart
Cost: $189 Members | $210 Nonmembers
8 Tuesdays, March 21, 2017 – May 9, 2017 | 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM

The aim of this course is to develop students’ facility in key elements of lively, powerful prose: vivid, precise diction and specific details; thematic coherence; appropriate organization and point of view; figurative language, including metaphor; and the modulation of tone and pacing in accordance with circumstances, genre, and audience.

To this end, the course offers a combination of reading (short works by authors such as Zora Neale Hurston, Ernest Hemingway, Tim O’Brien, Lucy Corin, and James Agee), writing (both independently and in response to stimulating prompts), discussion, and revision.

In the belief that offering constructive feedback can help us become better editors of our own writing, we devote much of our time in class to discussion of each other’s work and take each of our stories through at least two drafts.

Brady Earnhart holds an MFA from the Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He has taught poetry and fiction writing, composition, and literature to students of all ages for over twenty years and has released four critically lauded albums of original songs.
