|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until November 7, 2019

One event on November 14, 2019 at 1:00 pm

Instructor: Christina Ward-Niven
$189 Members | $210 Nonmembers
Thursdays, 9/19/19 – 11/7/19 | 1:00 pm -3:30 pm

In this workshop, we will read one story by a published author each week and discuss what makes it tick. How exactly does the story work (or not)? We’ll dig into a wide range of craft topics, as they come up—point of view, characterization, pacing, suspense, mystery, etc. Next we’ll turn the same lens to our own work, reading and responding to two participants’ pieces per week. Short stories or novel chapters are welcome. The instructor will provide each writer with a typed page of feedback at the end of her/his workshop session. Weekly reading assignments will also be provided by the instructor, via email.

This class is appropriate for writers of intermediate or advanced level—those who have taken at least two workshops previously (at WriterHouse or elsewhere).

Christina Ward-Niven holds an MFA in Fiction from Warren Wilson College’s Program for Writers. She also earned a BA in English from The College of William and Mary and an MS in Journalism from Boston University. She worked as a nonfiction writer and editor for several organizations in Washington, D.C., before moving to Charlottesville and shifting her focus to fiction. Her recent work has appeared or is forthcoming in Virginia Quarterly ReviewFiction Writers ReviewCRAFT Literary, and elsewhere. She won second place in the 2016 American Short Fiction short-story contest.

Registration is no longer available for this ongoing class.
