Whether you’re an experienced poet who has worked in the field for years or an aspiring writer who needs direction or impetus, this class can help jump start your creative impulse. Each week we’ll experiment with a poetic technique, then write a poem to workshop the next week. In our discussions, we will focus on revision techniques, and there will also be optional writing suggestions or assignments. Each poet will meet individually with the instructor. We’ll examine other contemporary poems to find what makes them successful and will draw from Mary Oliver’s A Poetry Handbook. For writers of all levels.
Mariflo Stephens has previously taught a poetry workshop at Writer House and has taught creative writing at Hollins University and the University of Virginia. Her poetry chapbook, Dream Straw, was published by Finishing Line Press and she is the editor of the poetry anthology Some Say Tomato.
