Through writing, reading, and discussion, we will explore narrative nonfiction: storytelling about real people, real places, and real events. Creative nonfiction allows a writer to employ the diligence of a reporter, the shifting voices and viewpoints of a novelist, the refined wordplay of a poet, and the analytical modes of an essayist.
About the Instructor: Jay Varner is the author of Nothing Left to Burn. While earning his B.A. in creative writing from Susquehanna University, Jay helped found The Susquehanna Review, one of the few national literary journals dedicated solely to undergraduate writing. He received his MFA n creative nonfiction from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and currently teaches at James Madison University in Harrisonburg and Piedmont Community College in Charlottesville. His essays have appeared in Bomb, Fjords, and the Georgetown Review among others.
