This is an introductory course in the art of fiction writing, mainly focusing on the short story form. Students will read classic and contemporary short stories in the genre and discuss them in class. In-class writing exercises will be assigned, as well as writing to be completed at home and brought in for discussion. This rigorous and rewarding class will give students a solid base in the fundamentals of writing fiction, as well as the opportunity to broaden their reading.

Helen Chandler is an Irish writer living in Charlottesville, where she teaches fiction at UVA. She holds an MFA in fiction from UVA and an MA in Creative Writing from University College Dublin. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Meridian magazine and her essays and fiction have appeared in LitHub, The Stinging Fly magazine and elsewhere. She is at work on her first novel.
