First Fridays Art Opening, “Reflecting” with Lee Christmas Halstead

March 1 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for food, wine, and lively conversation as we celebrate the artwork of Lee Christmas Halstead. Her exhibition, “Reflecting,” is free and open to the public.

Lee Christmas Halstead’s waterscapes are a study in light, color, and reflections on the Chesapeake Bay and beyond. Her paintings combine a love of nature, being outdoors, life on a sailboat, and Plein Air painting. The luminous effects of natural light and atmosphere characterize “Plein Air” paintings. Season, weather, and time of day become the focus of these observational paintings. Some paintings are completed on site while others are brought back to the studio for final touches. Lee also paints in the studio from on-site studies to create larger paintings created over time.

Lee uses a limited palette of three primary colors in warms and cools, three earth tones, along with white and black. The limited palette is necessary for outdoor, on-site painting. This simplification of color contributes to the harmony and unity Lee seeks in her paintings. Color shapes are abstracted in order to eliminate information. The immediacy of Plein Air can be seen in the painters’ response to a rapidly changing image. Lee enjoys the urgency in translating from observed image to the marks on the canvas.

“I love to paint. I love to play with the unspoken elements of the visual experience. I enjoy painting from direct observation. Observing nature I become connected with my environment. In essence I enjoy a visual call and response, a sensing affair, with my surroundings. I use the language of art to express a certain perceived order and harmony, relationships and unity. There is the outer dance of color shapes within the visual field and the inner call for presence that gives rise to each mark, each color-shape on the canvas.”

Those who are unable to attend the opening can view Lee’s work through April 1, during our open writing hours, Monday – Friday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
