First Fridays Art Opening, “A Place To Call” with Liza Wimbish and Alden Myers
April 5 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Join us for food, wine, and lively conversation as we celebrate the photography of Liza Wimbish and Alden Myers. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
Alden Myers attends the University of Virginia and is pursuing a double major in Art History and Studio Art. She is interested in how photographs can serve as catalysts for personal and collective memory and consciousness. Her work primarily focuses on documenting the life of material objects and how they form our mental landscapes.
This body of work is part of an ongoing investigation of the ritual of walking. The repetitive nature of daily walks serve as meditation and a method for documenting the individual’s positioning in space.
Liza Wimbish is an artist from Richmond, VA, in her first year at the University of Virginia studying studio art. Her work utilizes photography and mixed media practices. Primarily, her work deals with exploring her own identity and navigating her role within her family through unconventional self-portraiture, documentary-style photographs, and materialistic mixed media work.
This selection from her series of photographs focuses on the process of acclimating to a space and finding your sense of self within it. The images obscure a space’s conventional appearance and allow for the mundane to be reevaluated.
Those who are unable to attend the opening can view the exhibit through April 30, during our open writing hours, Monday – Friday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
