First pages possess an enormous significance. In the bible, the first page is where God creates the universe! In your own work, whether it’s a short story or a novel, fiction or nonfiction, it’s going to be where the reader enters whatever universe you’re creating or sharing. This is where you’re going to introduce them to things like your voice, the pace of the work, some of the themes, maybe some of the characters or the setting, and if these things don’t grab hold of them, if they don’t make the reader feel welcome, all the pages that come after will remain unread.

In this 5 day intensive, we will hyperfocus our efforts on first pages to gain a better understanding of not only how to maximize our impact on the reader, but also the impact that our first page has on how we write what follows. While we will be taking a look at the first pages of highly regarded works to see what the writers are doing, the class will revolve mostly around workshopping our own efforts and in-class revising. You are invited to bring along a first page that you’re looking to take to the next level or else start a new first page from scratch.
