Inside the Writer’s Studio

May 1, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Inside the Writer’s Studio with Desiree Cooper and Jenny Gardiner

For May’s IWS event, we’ll tackle writing and parenthood.

WriterHouse’s Inside the Writer’s Studio is not a reading—it’s a brunch-time brain massage for writers. Join us for a fun and engaging discussion by writers for writers about any and all aspects of writing.

Our April event will be on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM, with WriterHouse hosting Desiree Cooper and Jenny Gardiner. They’ll be discussing how to write about a subject that can quickly turn sappy, the ethics of writing about family, whether there is such a monolith of “parenthood” at all, and much more. We’ll have bagels and bubbly, light-brunch–style.

A 2015 Kresge Artist Fellow, Desiree Cooper is a former attorney, Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist, and Detroit community activist whose fiction dives unflinchingly into the intersection of racism and sexism. Using the compressed medium of flash fiction, she explores intimate spaces to reveal what it means to be human. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in Callaloo, Detroit Noir, Best African American Fiction 2010, and Tidal Basin Review, among other online and print publications. Her first collection of flash fiction, Know the Mother, was published by Wayne State University Press in March 2016. Cooper was a founding board member of Cave Canem, a national residency for emerging black poets. She is currently a Kimbilio fellow, a national residency for African American fiction writers.

Jenny Gardiner is an award-winning #1 Kindle bestselling author who has published fifteen novels, a memoir, and a collection of essays. Her work has been found in Ladies Home Journal, the Washington Post, Marie-Claire.com, and on National Public Radio. She is an occasional essayist on regional NPR affiliate WVTF-FM, and wrote a humorous column in Charlottesville’s Daily Progress for over a decade. She has worked as a publicist for a United States senator, and as a freelance photographer, photographing such notable public figures as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Taylor, and the President of Uganda. She’s been the volunteer coordinator for the Virginia Film Festival for five years. She’s really bad at math.

And in the role of James Lipton is our moderator Jennifer Niesslein, the editor of Full Grown People and of the anthologies Full Grown People: Greatest Hits, Volume One and Soul Mate 101 and Other Essays on Love and Sex. She’s written one memoir, Practically Perfect in Every Way (Putnam, 2007) and co-founded Brain, Child magazine. She helps organize these Inside the Writer’s Studio shindigs.
