Magical Realism is more than just the presence of the supernatural in a story. It is the forgivable intrusion of dream into reality. And it’s also a lot of fun. It affords us the opportunity to shake loose a little, to indulge the parts of us that sometimes wish the world was a little different than it is. Or maybe a lot different. Even if you’re someone who adores realism, dabbling in magical realism can be extremely cathartic and inspiring.
In this class, we will take a brief look at some examples of magical realism, and then we’ll let our imaginations run wild. We’ll learn through experience and experimentation (and writing exercises) what works and what doesn’t in this vast genre. This is truly a class for everyone, from magical realism aficionados to strict realists who can think of this as a spa day from the rigors of realism!
