Description 

Have you written a first-draft of a memoir and find you are ready to take it to the next stage? Are you ready to polish your scenes and make them shine while enjoying the structure and motivation provided from committed peers in a guided class setting?

Memoir in a Year Part II: Revise Your Book-Length Memoir will help you move from that first-draft to final-draft in one year! It’s an opportunity to join a writing cohort, study memoir craft and technique, workshop key scenes, measure your progress, meet goals and deadlines, and give and get support for the long slog from plotting to composition to revision and beyond.

This will be an MFA-level class. Class size is limited to 9, and participants must apply for admission.

Submission Requirements

  • Prerequisite: Either Memoir in a Year Part I: Writing a Draft or having completed more than 100 first draft pages of a memoir. Applicants who have not taken Memoir in a Year Part I will need to submit the first draft of their books as a pdf.
  • A brief personal statement (no more than 350 words) that includes a proposal for your project, your background, and expectations for this class.
  • A list of any nonfiction writing classes you’ve taken and where they were offered.
  • $100 nonrefundable deposit

 

Students will be notified of their acceptance in this program by 12/20/16. Upon acceptance, the remaining balance of the tuition will be due. Payment plans will be available for students who are accepted in this program.

About the Instructor

Sharon Harrigan has a B.A. in English from Columbia University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Pacific University. She has been teaching memoir writing at WriterHouse in Charlottesville since 2014.

Sharon has published over four dozen essays, reviews, and short stories. Her work has appeared in The New York TimesVirginia Quarterly ReviewPleiadesSlice, NarrativePearl, Prime Number, Silk Road, Mid American Review, Louisiana Literature, Apercus Quarterly, Rain Taxi, Hip Mama, Fiction Writers’ Review, Streetlight Magazine, Passing Through Journal, The Nervous Breakdown, and The Rumpus. She is a contributing editor at The Nervous Breakdown and at Silk Road Review.
