Joan Didion once said, “I don’t know what I think until I write it down.” The Personal Essay explores an inventive and elastic form that helps you understand and connect experiences and beliefs. We will closely read and study some of the masters of the personal essay through close reading and mini-exercises designed to spark new material or inspired ways to approach the prior drafts. Each writer will also be workshopped at least once during the course. By the end of the course, you’ll have produced at least one essay geared toward a public audience. Class will meet twice a week for 75-minute online sessions conducted on Zoom.
Ideally, students will have taken at least one prior workshop class, though anyone with a curious mind, an open heart, and a passion for reading or writing is encouraged to join.
Jay Varner is a Lecturer in the School of Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication at James Madison University. He’s previously taught in the MFA program at Hollins University, at Piedmont Virginia Community College, and at the University of Virginia. His memoir, Nothing Left to Burn, was published by Algonquin Books and his work has appeared in BOMB, The Black Warrior Review, Oxford American Magazine, and numerous other places.
