Reading for Craft: Fiction and Nonfiction (Online course)
April 30 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until June 18, 2020
Instructor: Jody Hesler
$189 Members | $210 Nonmembers
Thursdays, 4/16/20 – 6/18/20 | 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm (10 week class)
In this class we’ll be reading published short stories and essays that employ craft strategies in especially unique or effective ways. We’ll dig deep into each piece to see what makes it work, or what keeps it from working, for each of us. Stronger readers make stronger writers, so we will be able to apply what we learn from our reading to our own work. Discussions in class will range from craft issues that the pieces raise – dialog, characterization, tension, voice, etc. – to ways these pieces might inspire or challenge us in relation to our own work.
This class is appropriate for writers of intermediate or advanced level—those who have taken at least two workshops previously (at WriterHouse or elsewhere).
Jody Hobbs Hesler’s fiction, feature articles, essays, and book reviews appear or are forthcoming in Gargoyle, Raleigh Review, Streetlight Magazine, The Georgia Review, [PANK], South 85, Steel Toe Review, Valparaiso Fiction Review, Prime Number, Pearl, A Short Ride: Remembering Barry Hannah (VOX Press), Charlottesville Family Magazine, Charlottesville Wine & Country Living, several prize and themed anthologies, and other places. She holds an MFA in fiction from Lesley University. Learn more about her writing at jodyhobbshesler.com.
REGISTRATION IS CLOSED FOR THIS ONGOING CLASS.
