Think you can’t write a play in eight weeks? Think again! This intensive course will lead students through generating material, beginning a play, writing the middle, and finally arriving at the end of the play. A class for writers of all genres to hone skills in developing character, dialogue, setting, and conflict in order to complete a powerful narrative. The class will focus on generative exercises, workshopping, and writing time. Students should be prepared to do extensive out-of-class writing. The instructor will provide feedback to students during workshop sessions on an ongoing basis.
About the Instructor: Ariel Stess is a playwright and director. Her plays have been produced at the Wild Project and The Bushwick Starr. Time Out New York calls Stess’ writing “violently funny” and Culturebot says Stess “spins distinct universes with her language”. Stess has been a lecturer in the Dramatic Literature Department at NYU and in the Creative Writing Department at Brooklyn College. Stess is at work on a new commission from Playwrights Horizons, and a new play, an excerpt of which premiered last month at Dixon Place in NYC.
