A strong title immediately places your work above the work of others. The best agents and editors know that compelling titles are assets to literary successes. Effective titles set the stage for the reader to anticipate interest. In this seminar, we’ll explore strategies for choosing titles that attract interest in your writing, no matter the genre. Participants are encouraged to bring a list of favorite titles. Students are also invited to bring a poem or micro fiction/memoir (under 500 words) to brainstorm possible titles.
Joan Mazza has worked as a medical microbiologist, psychotherapist, and seminar leader, and has also been a Pushcart nominee. The author of six books, including Dreaming Your Real Self (Penguin/Putnam), she has had poems published in Rattle, Off the Coast, Kestrel, Slipstream, The American Journal of Nursing, The MacGuffin, Mezzo Cammin, Buddhist Poetry Review, and The Nation. She’s been writing a poem or more every day since December 2011. You can find her online at www.joanmazza.com.
