It can be hard to figure out what makes a piece of fiction succeed. In this workshop we’ll review each other’s work with a view towards pinning it down. We’ll move beyond the nuts and bolts of creative writing, and focus on refining our stories on a deeper level as well as the process of revision. We’ll also read a selection of published short stories as a way into discussions. Space is limited to eight students, who will be selected from the pool of applicants by the instructor. Applicants will submit a five-page excerpt of the short story they wish to work on during the class. Online application form here, application deadline December 15, 2013. Application deadline extended until December 31. After you have been accepted, you will have ten days to submit your payment.
Emma Rathbone’s first novel, The Patterns of Paper Monsters, came out in 2010. Her work has also appeared in the Virginia Quarterly Review, and on the New Yorker’s Shouts & Murmurs blog.
