Writing Children's Literature

Instructor: Kathryn Erskine

Cost: $180 Members | $200 Non-Members

8 Thursdays, June 10-July 29 | 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Focused primarily on fiction, this workshop will address the mechanics of writing for children, from picture books to novels. We’ll cover the elements of story—plot, pacing, story arc, characters, dialogue, and voice. We’ll gather tools and examine techniques. Through lecture, class participation, and sharing our work, we’ll learn what it takes to write a compelling story for children. Finally, we’ll look at the children’s market and see what editors really want.

Kathryn Erskine, a lawyer-turned-author, has written several books for young people, including Mockingbird (Philomel 2010), already hailed as “a masterpiece,” and the award-winning novel Quaking (Philomel 2007). She has given numerous workshops at schools, libraries, and book festivals.
