The Novel: Openings

Instructor: Kristen Rembold
Cost: $135 Members | $150 Non-Members
6 Wednesdays , January 25-February 29, 2012 | 6:30-9:00pm

In this class, we’ll consider the possibilities that open to us in the writing of the beginning sections of a novel, novella, or group of linked stories, asking questions such as: Does one start with a character or a story? How to handle time? How much exposition is too much? We’ll practice techniques for expansion and development. And we’ll practice reading like fiction writers, intentionally and with focused attention to elements like form and style, and how these apply to our projects. There will be an opportunity to workshop 10-15 pages of your opening.

Kristen Staby Rembold’s writing has appeared in New Ohio Review, Appalachia, Literary Mama, Green Mountains Review, Crab Orchard Review, and other journals. Her poetry chapbook, Leaf and Tendril, is forthcoming from Finishing Line Press. Her novel, Felicity, was winner of the Mid-List Press First Novel Series Award. She holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College.
