Creative Nonfiction (Daytime)

Instructor: Avery Chenoweth
Cost: $180 Members | $200 Non-Members
8 Thursdays, June 14-August 2, 2012 | 9:00am-11:30am

In this nonfiction workshop, we will examine and discuss pieces that range from reportage to essay and memoir, with discussions of how to focus a piece, how to conduct interviews, and how to weave disparate elements into a unified whole. Discussions of structure will alternate with exercises on literary aspects of factual prose. Writers will workshop one another’s work with an eye on publishing and gaining the confidence and self-assessment to work independently.

Avery Chenoweth, the author of three books, has taught writing in universities around Virginia. He has an MA from the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars and an MFA from UVA. His nonfiction books include Empires in the Forest: Jamestown and the Beginning of America, which won the 2007 Ippy Gold Medal for nonfiction; and Albemarle: a Story of Landscape and American Identity, which also won nonfiction awards.
