Instructor: Sharon Harrigan
$189 Members | $210 Nonmembers
Mondays and Wednesdays, 1/11/21 – 3/3/21 | 9:30 am – 10:45 am
Requirements: Students are asked to purchase Thrill Me: Essays on Fiction by Benjamin Percy.
In this class, we will spend Mondays studying techniques that will make your fiction more engaging, gripping, and vivid. We will discuss selections from Thrill Me: Essays on Fiction by Benjamin Percy, as well as short stories and novel excerpts from Bret Anthony Johnston, Rebecca Makkai, and others. On Wednesdays we will workshop each other’s work—short stories, flash fiction, or short novel excerpts. We will do some “warm-up” exercises and prompts, but most of the writing will be done outside of class. Participants should have taken at least one fiction workshop, either at WriterHouse or elsewhere.
Sharon Harrigan is the author of the debut novel Half, which was published in summer 2020, and the memoir Playing with Dynamite, published in 2017. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Pacific University and has published more than 50 personal essays, short stories, and reviews in such venues as Virginia Quarterly Review, New York Times (Modern Love), and Narrative. A starred Booklist review called Half “suspenseful, lyrical, and consuming,” and Publishers’ Weekly called the novel “riveting and inventive.”
