Earning That Creative License: A Generative Class for Nonfiction Writers – Ongoing class
April 8 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until May 27, 2021
Instructor: Jody Hobbs Hesler
$150 Members | $165 Nonmembers
Thursdays, 3/25/21 – 5/27/21 | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
Emphasizing the “create” in creative nonfiction, this generative writing class will employ exercises to help creative nonfiction writers dig deeper into hard to recreate real-life scenes. Students will explore techniques more often associated with fiction writing to fully embody and envision motivations, conversations, behaviors, and backstories about which limited or no factual information exists. In-class exercises can help spark new essays or breathe new life into scenes that have been especially hard to crack.
This is a generative class, which means we will be creating new material, but the exercises could easily apply to projects that are already underway, for expanding or troubleshooting tricky scenes or craft issues. Some reading assignments may be required outside of class, but most course work will happen during class time.
Jody Hobbs Hesler’s fiction, feature articles, essays, and book reviews appear or are forthcoming in Arts & Letters, North American Review’s Open Space online, CRAFT, Grist, Pithead Chapel, Gargoyle, Raleigh Review, Streetlight Magazine, The Georgia Review, [PANK], Valparaiso Fiction Review, Prime Number, A Short Ride: Remembering Barry Hannah, Charlottesville Wine & Country Life, and other publications.
