6 Wednesdays, 5/24/17 – 6/28/17 | 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM

“The most important question anyone can ask is: What myth am I living?” – Carl Jung

“I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.” –Joan Didion

This class will focus on how to take personal writing in any form—memoir, personal essay, or creative nonfiction—and mine it for the truths that make stories into art. We’ll examine works by established authors, such as Joan Didion, Leslie Jameson, Tanehasi Coates, Cheryl Strayed, Roxanne Gay, and Frank McCort, generate ideas for your own stories and workshop pieces you have written. Differences between the personal essay and memoir will be fleshed out as you find the form that best fits the story you wish to tell. This class is appropriate for writers of all experience levels.
