Participants often say that part of what draws them to writing classes is the accountability; they write more because they have deadlines and classmates waiting to give them feedback. With that in mind, this class will support writers in generating new material by including weekly writing hours on Tuesdays and typical workshop sessions on Thursdays.
For our Tuesday writing hours, participants will join the class via Zoom. After a brief greeting and sharing of an optional writing prompt, students will focus solely on their writing. The instructor will be available via chat to answer questions and provide encouragement. Participants will come together briefly at the hour’s conclusion to share their progress. These writing hours are optional.
Thursday sessions will be opportunities for writers to get their short stories and novel chapters workshopped by the class. Depending on class size, students will have two-three workshops. Participants will be welcome to workshop a revised piece if they choose. If time allows, we’ll also read published fiction and have class discussions about craft choices the writers made—what worked and what didn’t.
Participants will leave the class with new material as well as feedback about their work that will help them in revision.
