$160 Members | $175 Nonmembers
Thursdays, 9/29/22 – 11/17/22 | 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. EDT

“When we read a distinctive voice…our full attention is aroused and engaged because we suspect that here, now, at last, we may learn how someone does it––that is, how they live, breathe, think, feel and talk.” Tony Hoagland

In this class, we’ll develop our unique voice: the compelling, entertaining, and guiding presence that draws readers deeply into our stories. With an eye on craft, we’ll read short pieces and excerpts (fiction, non-fiction, poetry) by a variety of writers. We’ll discuss point of view, narrative strategy, and how each writer’s voice comes to embody a personality and sensibility. You’ll write and workshop a variety of short (3-page) exercises that explore voice, mood, and more. You’ll have the option of generating new work or revising work already in progress. Memoirs, novels, short stories and personal essays are welcome.

Deborah’s work has appeared in Dissent MagazineThe Southampton Review, and Five on the Fifth. She earned her MALS in literature from Wesleyan University and MFA in fiction writing from Sarah Lawrence College. She currently teaches creative writing at the Hudson River Community Education program in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

This class has already begun. Students may register until the second week (before 10/6/22) by emailing programs@writerhouse.org.
