While a picture is worth a thousand words, a well told thousand-word story may be priceless. Join this class to learn the essentials of flash fiction. Writing very short stories helps writers to hone a variety of skills, and doing so can yield powerful flash pieces as well as improved prose when writers create longer works.

Each week, we’ll learn about two types of flash fiction, read examples of them, discuss the readings, and try our hands at writing one of the two types of flash using writing prompts. The class will also include overarching advice on the dos and don’ts of writing very short fiction.

Writers will leave the class with a solid understanding of flash fiction, several pieces in progress, and stronger storytelling skills. Are you ready to challenge yourself?

Participants will need to buy Brevity: A Flash Fiction Handbook by David Galef prior to the first class.
