Can limitations free our imagination? Do rules help us tap what’s raw and exciting in our writing? Yes and yes! In this class we’ll harness the power of poetic forms—old and new—to broaden our writing toolkits and deepen our awareness of how poems work. Each week we’ll explore one form; afterwards write our own poems in that form to workshop the next week. We’ll spend time with both traditional forms like the sonnet and contemporary, experimental forms. Whether you’re looking for a structured way to write new poems or a fresh approach to revising drafts, you’ll leave this class with plenty of ideas. Workshopping your poems is encouraged but not required, and all students will receive thoughtful individualized feedback from the instructor.

Annie Kim’s first poetry collection, Enter the Cyclorama, won the 2015 Michael Waters Poetry Prize and will be published by the University of Southern Indiana. Her poems have appeared, or are forthcoming, in Kenyon Review, Ninth Letter, Mudlark, Asian American Literary Review, DMQ Review, and elsewhere. A graduate of Warren Wilson College’s MFA Program for Writers and the recipient of fellowships from the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and Hambidge Center, Annie works at the University of Virginia School of Law as the Assistant Dean for Public Service.
