Many writers struggle with accurately depicting a particular, place, time and believable setting and characters when writing. Especially when crafting historical fiction or stories, setting, character, dialogue and nuance must be convincing and true to life. In this series of classes, students will read short pieces of fiction and examine how the author utilizes literary elements to craft a particular place and time. Additionally, students will write and workshop their stories and have the option of generating new work or revising a work in progress. This class will help students with the research and writing process of developing realistic stories in memoirs, novels, short stories and personal essays. Students will develop their writing through:

  • Discussion and exercises that aid in the research process
  • Reflection prompts that aid the writer in what is trying to be conveyed by a story, memoir or essay
  • Critiques and feedback on submitted material

Margaret S. Marangione is a Professor of Writing at the University of Virginia and Blue Ridge Community College. Her novel, Across the Blue Ridge Mountains, is under consideration for the Weatherford Award and has been submitted for the Pen Faulkner award. Additionally, her poetry has been published in Appalachian Journal, Lumina Journal, the North Shore Women’s paper and Sage Woman magazine.
