If you’re ready to write, write, write this fall, this class is for you. Class sessions will alternate between traditional fiction workshops and themed generative writing nights that focus on a specific element of craft.
Every other week we’ll workshop participants’ flash fiction, short stories, or novel chapters. Depending on class size, students will have 1-2 workshops. For workshops, participants may share new work born from a response to one of the in-class writing prompts or other material they already have in progress.
For the generative weeks, the sessions will include reading and discussion of a published writing sample that illustrates effective use of a specific element of craft, such as voice, figurative language, conflict, and balancing scene and exposition. Afterwards, participants will get three specific tips for that week’s craft element before completing a writing activity intended to practice that specific element. Finally, students pair up to read each other’s work and discuss it.
Participants will leave class with new material, feedback on their work, and greater insight into craft elements that will improve their writing going forward.
If you’ve taken this class in the past with Kristie, the craft topics and readings will be different, so join us for the same structure with new material.
