Have you ever been working on your novel and found yourself wondering: what would happen next? As writers sometimes the more important question is why—why should that happen next?

This class will look at narrative arc with the goal of helping participants know what should happen where in their work-in-progress (WIP). We’ll complete activities to identify key narrative elements in your WIP and write a synopsis (I know—the dreaded synopsis) of the entire narrative arc. Participants will have at least two workshops in which we’ll critique first chapters and either a climax or middle chapter.

To be successful as participants, writers will want to have completed a novel draft or be at least halfway through a draft.

Kristie Smeltzer’s work has appeared in The Doctor T.J. Eckleburg Review, Apeiron Review, Eclectica Magazine, The Florida Review, and So to Speak. Kristie is currently working on three novels. She earned her MFA at the University of Central Florida.
