A hallmark of good fiction is that it keeps readers turning the page, eager to see what happens next. As writers, we know that what needs to look effortless doesn’t always come so easily. Creating a compelling plot that manages to be surprising yet authentic, while maintaining appropriate tension throughout, is no mean feat. In this class, we’ll discuss how to translate our ideas, partial drafts, and rough first drafts into a concrete plan for fiction that will have readers throwing their hands high and yelling, “WEE!” Too much hyperbole? Fine: the point is they’ll keep reading.
We’ll use a series of activities, worksheets, and class discussions to better understand plot and tension. In turn, this will help participants create a concrete plan for what needs to happen next to get their work-in-progress closer to being impossible to put down.
Kristie Smeltzer’s work has appeared in The Doctor T.J. Eckleburg Review, Apeiron Review, Eclectica Magazine, The Florida Review, and So to Speak. Kristie is currently working on three novels. She earned her MFA at the University of Central Florida.
