Wednesdays, 10/4/23 – 11/8/23 | 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. ET
In this 6-week Zoom course, we will pair poetry and fiction readings by craft elements, then compare and contrast how the different disciplines approach that element. Class discussion will be co-led by a poet and a fiction writer. The course will also include generative writing exercises inspired by the class, which we’ll gently workshop. The goal is an interactive deep dive into how poetry and fiction can talk to each other, and how each discipline can inspire and deepen the understanding of the other.
Jody Hobbs Hesler’s debut story collection, What Makes You Think You’re Supposed to Feel Better, is forthcoming from Cornerstone Press, November 2023, and her debut novel, Without You Here, is forthcoming from Flexible Press, November 2024. Her other writing includes short fiction, feature articles, essays, and book reviews, which can be found in a range of journals including The Millions, Atticus Review, Arts & Letters, CRAFT, Pithead Chapel, Gargoyle, Raleigh Review, The Georgia Review, [PANK], Valparaiso Fiction Review, Virginia Wine & Country Life, and elsewhere. Aran Donovan is Assistant Director for the Virginia Center for the Book, where she works with both the Festival of the Book and Book Arts. She holds an MFA in Poetry and Translation from the University of Arkansas and an MA in Italian from Middlebury Summer Language Schools. She has attended residencies at the Edward A. Albee Foundation, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. Her work has appeared in Best New Poets 2013, Rattle, New Orleans Review, The Common, Willow Springs, and Juked. She has lived in Italy, France, New Mexico, and New Orleans, but Virginia is starting to feel like home.
