WriterHouse strongly recommends any student at greater risk for contracting Covid-19 wear a mask. In the event of significant Covid-19 upticks, students must be prepared for the mask policy to change and to transition to a virtual platform if necessary. No refunds will be issued if in-person classes/seminars need to transition online.

This course will be a deep dive into point of view questions. Who is telling the story? To whom is the story being told? From what distance in time and space? And in what form? These questions all have implications for the language used in the telling of the story—both its tone and content—as well as its effect on the reader. We will study published work—both short pieces and novel excerpts—to learn how other writers have answered these questions. Through in-class writing exercises, we’ll also have an opportunity to learn how shifting point of view may have a significant impact on the work.

Clifford Garstang is the author of two previous novels, Oliver’s Travels and The Shaman of Turtle Valley, as well as the forthcoming The Last Bird of Paradise. He is also the author of three story collections, In an Uncharted CountryHouse of the Ancients and Other Stories, and What the Zhang Boys Know, which won the Library of Virginia Literary Award for Fiction. A former international lawyer, he lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

This class is canceled.
