Surviving The Query Trenches: “Pitching, Pitfalls, and PitMad, Oh My!” (Online seminar) – Cancelled!

November 7, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Instructor: Emily Thiede
$60 Members | $65 Nonmembers
Session One, Saturday, 11/7/20 | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
Session Two, Sunday, 11/8/20 | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

There’s a reason many writers describe querying as “going into the trenches,” but like any battle, it’s easier to survive the fight if you start with the right tools in your armory.

In this course, we’ll explore resources for building (and narrowing down) a list of agents to query, and the pros-and-cons of non-traditional paths like twitter pitch contests, mentorship competitions, and writing conferences. Participants will get the opportunity to start a personalized list of agents based on their genre of choice and learn which red flags may mean the difference between a good agent and a predatory “shmagent.”

For the hands-on portion of the seminar, we’ll use games like Query Letter MadLibs and “Guess That Movie” to take some of the mystery and angst out of crafting a query letter and you’ll learn how a few simple questions can help you pare your story down to its key elements. This class is suitable for writers of all levels

Emily Thiede is a former teacher and a writer of Young Adult novels. Before signing with a literary agent, Emily had two manuscripts chosen for international mentorship programs, PitchWars and Author Mentor Match, which gave her the rare opportunity to build relationships and get career advice from authors and agents around the world. When she’s not writing, Emily can be found volunteering at WriterHouse open hours and hosting monthly happy hour events.
