Rhyme (This seminar is full!)

June 29, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

Instructor: Neil Perry
$60 Members | $65 Nonmembers
DATE CHANGE: Saturday, 6/29/19 | 10:00 am – 1:30 pm

This seminar will investigate the strange topic of rhyme and rhyming.  At once the formal element most readily associated with poetry and the thing most poets first kick out of their tool box, rhyme has a unique and almost paradoxical place in our consideration of craft.  We’ll look at poems that rhyme and rhyme well.  We’ll look at poems that rhyme terribly.  We’ll talk about strategies for using rhyme in our own poems (both end-rhyme and internal rhyme, full rhyme and slant rhyme), and how meter, or thinking metrically, can work alongside it.  Participants in the seminar should bring a poem (with copies for the group) that uses rhyme in some way.

Nathaniel (Neil) Perry is the author of Nine Acres (American Poetry Review, 2011), which won the 2011 APR/Honickman First Book Prize. His poems and translations have appeared recently in American Poetry Review, Cincinnati Review, Gettysburg Reviews, Bat City Review, and elsewhere. He is the editor of the Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review and lives with his family in rural southside Virginia.
