Middle Grade, Young Adult, Adult: What’s the best fit for your SciFi/Fantasy novel idea?

April 24 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Instructor: Emily Thiede
$40 Members | $45 Nonmembers
Saturday, April 24, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Can you curse in YA? How long are MG novels? Are dragons “in” or “out?” If my main character is 17 years old, can my book still be for adults? What does “crossover” mean?

In recent years, the publishing world has drawn some clear lines (and some less clear lines) between age-categories, so how can writers decide where their book idea might belong? In this seminar, we’ll compare excerpts from recent releases in each age category and discuss how various creative choices can help or hinder a book’s chances of success. Participants will leave class feeling knowledgeable about industry expectations and confident about how to shape their novel in order to give it the best possible chance to sell and find eager readers.

Topics will include:
• Book length
• Sex, drugs, and &%@! : Which content is acceptable or taboo in each age-category? (You might be surprised!)
• Style choices: Point of view, voice, humor, pacing, and more
• The one thing every writer should do before attempting to sell their book.

Note: While this course focuses primarily on science fiction and fantasy, much of the content is applicable to other genres as well, and all experience levels are welcome!
