Getting published has never been easy, but once upon a time the protocol was at least straightforward: writers would focus mainly on searching (and searching, and searching) for a literary agent willing to introduce their manuscript into an otherwise impenetrable industry. Of course, times have changed. While the traditional approach continues to work for many authors, an ever-expanding universe of publishing options has made ‘straightforward’ a thing of the past. Is your head buzzing with terms like .epub & .mobi, print-on-demand, audiobook AAX, offset run, and indie press? Join author and publisher Chris Register for an in-depth survey of the choices faced by today’s writers, illustrated with examples and lessons from his own winding journey through the process, and addressing questions specific to participants’ individual goals.
Day 1: Training & Outfitting for Tour: Are You Ready to Embark in Search of Publication?
We’ll begin with a heart-to-heart discussion of the most important question of all: Is seeking publication right for you, right now? If not, what do you need to change to put yourself in the ready position?
Day 2: Studying the Map: What Are Your Potential Publishing Routes Today?
On Day 2 we’ll survey today’s primary publishing routes (traditional vs. self) and formats (print runs, print-on-demand, ebooks, audiobooks).
Day 3: Choosing a Direction: Which Route Seems Best for You?
Our Day 3 class will focus on finding the most appropriate publishing route and format(s) for you, depending on your individual situation and goals.
Day 4: Getting There: Optimizing Your Approach as You Move Forward
Now that we’ve selected our routes, on Day 4 we’ll identify the success strategies and potential obstacles particular to each one.
Day 5: Route Adjustments: Alternative Ways to Reach Your Destination
Situations change, routes sometimes get blocked, and destinations might be fluid. We’ll wrap up the course on Day 5 with a survey of alternative methods of getting your work out into the world.
