Marion Roach says, “the personal essay is a manageable, distinctive delivery system for thoughts that are in one’s head or heart and get put down on the page. It is a short piece of writing from you that illuminates us on one of your areas of expertise. It is what you know after something you’ve been through.”

This class will help you find and strengthen your voice and help you identify salient stories in your life, with the goal of discovering what is at the heart of those stories so that you can shape that material into a great personal essay.

Deborah Prum’s essays and articles have appeared in many places including The Washington Post, Southern Living, and Ladies’ Home Journal. Her humorous radio essays have aired on NPR-member stations. Her articles on the craft of writing have been published in The Writer, The Writer’s Handbook, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Bulletin. She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Virginia, James Madison University, the Virginia Festival of the Book and many other conferences and workshops.

Deborah’s award-winning short stories have appeared in many journals and anthologies, including The Virginia Quarterly Review, Across the Margin, The Virginia Writers Centennial Anthology, Sweetbay, and Streetlight Magazine.
