In this two-day seminar, we’ll explore the way poets and poetry can figure non-traditional natural spaces. The Romantic tradition generally has us chasing butterflies or sitting by singing brooks. But what about the messier places in our world — cityscapes, bogs, suburbs or clearcuts? How might poetry navigate these sorts of places and to what end? The first session will look at a number of examples of poems doing this sort of unnatural nature writing and we’ll discuss exactly what strategies poets can use. The second session will be a workshop, so participants should be prepared to share their work.

Nathaniel “Neil” Perry is the author of Nine Acres (American Poetry Review, 2011), which won the 2011 APR/Honickman First Book Prize. His poems and translations have appeared recently in American Poetry Review, Cincinnati Review, Gettysburg Review, Bat City Review, and elsewhere. He is the editor of the Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review and lives with his family in rural southside Virginia.
