During this week, young writers will explore the craft and fun of creative writing through a variety of prompts, journaling, music, brainstorming, people-watching, and visits to nearby inspiring locations. Modes of expression and experimentation will include poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and more! Throughout the week, we will learn about and participate in various elements of the writing workshop process from start to finish, sharing and receiving ideas and refining our work. At the end of the week, each young writer will publish a piece in a journal of collected works from this exciting week of writing!
Limit: 10 students. At the end of the writing camp session, we’ll have a reading for parents and friends.
Erin James has taught English and Creative Writing for nearly a decade, and this will be her seventh summer working with students at WriterHouse. Additionally, she has been both a student and teacher at UVA’s Young Writers Workshop, and a judge for the Writer‘s Eye Creative Writing Contest that is hosted by the University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art for the past six years. She has attended two week-long workshops for Teachers as Writers at Bard College’s Institute for Writing and Thinking, and this summer received an author fellowship to attend the Martha’s Vineyard Institute for Creative Writing. Before she began teaching, she studied Journalism and English at New York University, and she ultimately received her undergraduate degree in English from the University of Virginia. In addition to writing Erin loves reading, hiking, practicing and teaching yoga, cooking, being outside, traveling, and spending time with her husband, sons Noah and Jacob, and friends.
