Unity Days Poetry Event to Highlight the Power of Writing to Heal
On August 9, 2019, from 12:00-1:30 PM, WriterHouse, in partnership with The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative and the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library, will host a free poetry writing event open to aspiring poets of all ages. In concert with the city of Charlottesville’s appointed “Unity Days” to commemorate the events of August 11 and 12, 2017, this event is designed to bring the community together through the healing medium of writing poetry. It will be held in the Madison Room of the Central Library, located at 201 East Market Street in downtown Charlottesville.
Participants will be invited to write a brief poem or piece of prose, using the theme of “on the wings of unity” as a springboard. Each poem or prose bit will be written on a feather-shaped piece of paper, then attached to a sculpture of the Virginia state bird, the cardinal. The sculpture has been created by local artist and poet Jum Jirapan. The cardinal will be on display at the Central Library during the month of August. Anyone unable to attend the event is welcome to submit a brief piece for inclusion and email it to programs@writerhouse.org.
Light lunch refreshments will be served during the event. Interested attendees are asked to RSVP at programs@writerhouse.org at least one day prior to the event. For more information, please call WriterHouse at 434.296.1922.
